Repairing Stucco Holes & Cracks
Sometimes stucco can get cracked or form holes in it's structure. There are a few ways to repair the damage either with caulk or with stucco mix, it just depends on the size of the crack or hole. Here's what we recommend:
- Chip Off Any Broken or Deteriorating Stucco: Contrary to what you are doing, sometimes the best way to repair stucco is to remove some of it. If it's weak or brittle and crumbling, we have to chip off the loose pieces before we start working. You can either use a hammer or a hammer and chisel combo. We will then wipe down the are with a wire brush.
- Asses Damage To Metal Mesh: Underneath the stucco is a wire mesh which holds it in place. We will check that mesh for any damage or rust. If there is rust or other damage, we will have to cut it out with metal snips and replace it with new mesh before we apply the new stucco. IF not, then we can just apply the new stucco with no problems!
- Prep Your Walls For Paint: You don't want dust or dirt on the walls when you paint otherwise it will stay in the paint and look gritty on the walls. We make sure to smooth out and rough edges with sandpaper and wipe the walls down with a wet cloth. When it's dried and ready we can start painting!
- Mixing The Stucco: Now is when we start mixing the stucco batch being careful to not make more than we can use in a 20 minute window, otherwise it will dry before we can use it. Wetting the area with water from a spray bottle will make it easier for the stucco to blend with the old.
If we have to match the color of your old stucco, that could be tricky and requires a very good eye. There's liquid stucco/mortar we use to tint the mixture to be as close to the original color as possible. - Applying The Stucco: We then apply the stucco to the metal mesh with a masonry towel and cover it completely. Once the surface has dried after a few minutes we score the stucco surface with the towel in a number of "X" patterns to help the next coat of stucco adhere better.
We then cover the area to prevent it from drying out while we let it cure. We have to wait until it is hard enough for the second layer to be applied and not crack the first layer.
